Dr. Sylvia Chalmers was the coroner and a General Practitioner in the small town of Harmony. Unknown to those around her, she was also the mother of Melissa Dorn and Marine Private First Class Thomas Dorn.

Chalmers gave the initial impression of being a meek older woman, an experienced medical practitioner who appeared polite and sweet if not a bit naive, and a helpless cog in the bureaucracy of a small backwater town which with its limited resources, was unable to save the life of someone who she thought was PFC Dorn, but was actually his friend, Corporal Morgan, when he went into cardiac arrest in her office. Then claiming that Dorn's grief-stricken sister persuaded her as the town's coroner into cremating his body without an autopsy. This was a facade and a false story, however, as it was revealed over the course of an NCIS investigation that Chalmers was in fact the murderer of Dorn and possibly Morgan, who ruthlessly tried to cover it up and forced her daughter to participate.
