Rick Johnson was a Lieutenant and also a Navy SEAL who was training for a rescue mission, having been vetted by the CIA.

During a routine training exercise, his clip snapped, causing him to fall to his death which resulted in NCIS being called in and the CIA told NCIS they had 38 hours to solve the case or the mission along with four months of planning would be scrapped altogether.

It was later revealed that Johnson's wife had been responsible for her husband's death as she had seen him embrace a priest, Larry Clannon after spending two days in a hotel room in Baltimore with him. Gibbs later received a call from Andrew Kramer, an Agent with the CIA and told him that Johnson's death was a suicide while Caitlin Todd was seen comforting a sobbing Denise.
