Ray was an Ensign assigned to the USS Foster where he was seen telling Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo about his own handheld sword which was decorated in gold and which he personally kept. Ray also told DiNozzo that the swords were brought by Seamen at the Base Exchange in Puerto Rico.

As a result, DiNozzo later headed undercover to Puerto Rico to get information on the sword that Seaman Russell MacDonald had brought.
