Jerry Smith was a Petty Officer who worked at Norfolk under Commander Robert Morris.
In addition to that, Smith was also married and had a wife named Wendy Smith.
While driving on Route 249 and talking on the phone with his wife, Smith was shot and killed by an unknown person.
Seconds after he'd died, Smith's car then sped out of control and headed over an embankment, coming to rest at the bottom of the area with his death prompting the Virginia State Police to contact NCIS due to Smith's status as a Navy Officer.
It was soon discovered that one of Smith's colleagues, John Kirby, had been posing as him for several months.
The team also learned that Petty Officer Smith had an affair with Morris's unnamed wife while at Pearl Harbor, but Morris hadn't recognized him.
However, Smith later learned that Morris was going to be his new C.O. at Norfolk, which meant that the possible honorable discharge wouldn't happen if Morris found out.
In despair, Smith and Kirby agreed to switch identities to presumably ensure the honorable discharge went ahead as planned.
The NCIS team later discovered that his wife, Wendy, had been responsible for Smith's death as he had been cheating on her ever since they had gotten married in the first place. She was actually tailing him while they were arguing on the phone, and eventually shot him dead out of pure rage or spite.
