Literary AllusionsEdit

Damocles was reputedly a courtier to the court of Dionysius II, the Younger of Syracuse.

According to Cicero, Damocles was reputed to have remarked to Dionysius that he had truly been blessed with good fortune by the gods. Dionysius permitted Damocles to switch roles with him for one day. Damocles agreed immediately, overjoyed that Dionysius allowed him a glimpse however, fleeting into the lifestyle of a tyrant responsible for ruling a polis. It was said that Damocles enjoyed the experience until conclusion of the feast when he diverted his eyes from the delights before him, did he notice that finely honed blade suspended directly above his head, to his horror he noticed that the sword was held aloft by a horse hair. Damocles experienced a change of heart and requested leave of Dionysus to resume his station immediately.
