Gonzales was the partner of CIA Agent Jack Canton who helped NCIS Special Agents Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Anthony DiNozzo and Caitlin Todd track down Canton who had gone rogue and had started killing two Marines to cover up a disastrous mission as well as the fact that Canton had taken the two million dollars that was the hostage money for himself.

The team tracked Canton down to a funeral home and refusing to heed any advice, Gonzales attempted to reason with his former partner and approached out of the corner to talk to him but this proved to be fatal as seconds later, Canton responded by shooting Gonzales in the heart, causing the other man to slump against the wall, the impact killing him instantly while DiNozzo looked on in shock.

Despite that tragedy, Gibbs, DiNozzo and Todd were successful in saving Major Peary and it's presumed that Canton died in the shootout between himself, Tony and Kate.
