Barbara Swain was the fourth intended victim of serial killer Brett Evans and also a Petty Officer Second Class stationed at the Jacksonville Naval Air Base.
Like the previous victims, she went missing while on her way to work and there was no trace of her for up to four months.
After Carolyn Figgus's body was discovered, NCIS became convinced that a serial killer was behind the gruesome killings. As a result of Swain vanishing without a trace, Special Agent Jane Melankovic filed a missing person's report which Agent Timothy McGee later found, prompting the Major Case Response Team to head to Jacksonville to look for answers.
Swain was later found by Agent Anthony DiNozzo who managed to tell his boss, Leroy Jethro Gibbs where she was before Swain knocked him unconscious and took his service weapon, intending to kill herself.
Gibbs, McGee, Melankovic and Caitlin Todd eventually arrived to find a confused Swain asking them if what DiNozzo was true: that Evans, her captor was really dead as the two of them were going to go get married. Swain attempted to pull the trigger, stating that she couldn't go on without him.
Luckily, Kate was able to talk Swain out of pulling the trigger, saving the Petty Officer's life while ensuring that the entire case was closed for good.
