AFIS or Automated Fingerprint Identification System is a governmental software which various federal agencies use to recover or confirm the fingerprints of fugitives.

It is mostly used in NCIS (series) where Abigail Sciuto uses it to confirm the fingerprints of a potential suspect.

In recent years, though, Special Agent Timothy McGee has been using an AFIS Mobile option on his pocket fingerprint scanner to get the identity of the dead bodies at the crime scenes he and his colleagues of the NCIS Major Case Response Team have been called to investigate.

While this works most of the time, on some occasions, McGee has not been able to get any data, simply due to the victim's fingerprints were either removed or the information has been hidden by another agency.
