A.J Chegwidden was an Admiral and a former Navy SEAL also the person in charge of the JAG personnel who after being head JAG for six or seven years, retired from his position at the beginning of Season 10 of the JAG series.

After accidentally ejecting himself from an F-14 Harm was piloting in the JAG Season 8 episode, "Heart and Soul", Chegwidden befriended an abandoned female German Shepherd whom he eventually took in and soon gave her the name, "Dammit" while remarking that he knew the name would come to him eventually.

Chegwidden return in the NCIS Season 10 finale episode, Damned If You Do (episode) which in turns marks his first ever appearance in the main NCIS series. NCIS Director Leon Vance called Chegwidden in to defend Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
